Enabling the informal recycling sector to prevent plastic pollution and deliver an inclusive circular economy

Recycling by the informal sector provides a rapid, inexpensive solution to plastic pollution, whilst supporting livelihoods via their inclusion and empowerment. This will have greatest benefit environment if interventions are targeted at types of pollution that most damaging from an ecological wider risk perspective. Interventions should target three aspects pollution: reducing barriers collection, improving revenue materials recycler remuneration, increasing quality materials. Done well, these increase collection rate, reduce plastics, help millions people escape poverty.
